THE CHAKRA SYSTEM

muladhara: the root chakra

The first chakra is all about grounding down and planting roots. After all, the element is earth! A balanced root provides us with stability and safety. This is where our "fight or flight" survival instincts come from. An unbalanced root chakra may bring fear, obesity, sciatica issues, eating disorders or heavy/ungrounded feelings.

ROOT CHAKRASANAS

  • Standing at the top of your mat in tadasana (mountain pose), spread your toes and evenly distribute weight from all four corners of your feet: toe to heel & side to side. Imagine your feet growing roots down deep into the earth

  • Notice your posture. Align your shoulders over your hips and slightly tuck the chin to raise the crown of the head up towards the sky. Envision the dual action of the spine elongating while the roots of your feet sink deeper into the earth

  • Integrate such poses as: tree pose, mountain pose, chair pose, bridge pose, cobra, downward facing dog, easy pose, child's pose
